I offer freelance editing services for life sciences manuscripts, grants, and other technical works.
As a trained research scientist with a PhD in Biology, I am familiar with the terminology of a wide array of life sciences fields. What I don't yet know, I can learn quickly -- It's part of the fun!
Hesitant to hire a freelance science editor for work you usually do yourself? How much time does it take you to carefully tweak and proofread and format that manuscript or grant document to get it just so? Those tasks aren't trivial!
Now consider the cost of hiring a skilled science editor (that's me!) to do that work instead, freeing up many hours for you to actually do research or write more grants. That's money well spent -- plus you (ideally) pull fewer bleary-eyed late nights to hit that submission deadline.
Manuscripts and grants (NIH, CDC, etc) I have recently contributed to include these fields:
List of edited works (recently published) [click to go to list]
I currently edit using LaTeX, MS Word track changes, and Google Docs.
I tailor edits towards your intended audience. I consult a journal's Aims and Scope, Instructions to Authors, and style guides.

Disclaimer: You are paying for my time and expertise to improve the quality of your scientific writing.
I cannot help you develop your hypotheses or determine the best methodology; I can tell you if what you wrote logically follows through from Introduction to Conclusions based on the contents of the document.
I cannot guarantee that your grant will be funded or your manuscript published in your preferred journal. Those decisions are up to the individual granting institution or publication, and are based on the merits of your science. My job is to make sure your writing does not detract from your great science, and to enhance it to the best of my ability.
I require payment in full regardless of the outcome of your manuscript.

Philosophy
Why do scientific editing when I love field ecology so much? One thing I discovered about myself during my doctoral odyssey is that I wanted to impact our world. It's why I wanted to become a scientist in the first place. Some of the best researchers are terrible communicators! Their message can get lost in the ocean of research out there when they lose their audience. You've all seen those bad presentations and read those papers!
Good science editing requires the expertise of someone trained in a related field, who can understand the jargon -- and understand the audience -- to bridge the gap between the researcher and that audience. And maybe toss out some of the jargon. ;) It actually helps to have some distance from the topic.
Science editing marries my fascination with all things science with the goal of clearer communication, which makes science more impactful. Makes it heard.
Segments of the public are disconnected from science and scientists, and indeed, are quite suspicious of us as a group. Bridging the gap between stakeholders - whether it is scientists and the public, or scientists and industry, government, or other institutions - is crucial in our fast-changing world.
